Children in Need 2013 - Results

Thanks to all the staff and customers involved with our Children in Need fundraising events on the 15th & 16th November at the Stour Centre and to all those that donated some of their hard earned cash. We raised an impressive £474.91 during the two events we held! The first event held on Friday the 15th in the main reception was the staff team challenge cycle race.

Ellie Gooding an Ashford Leisure Trust Casual RA and Fun Camp Assistant at the Julie Rose Stadium confirmed her status as the UK’s best under 17 age group pole vaulter. Ellie won the U17 England Athletics Championship title clearing a height of 3.80m on Sunday 1st September.

Back in 1976, aged only 12 years, Paul Bennett became one of only a handful of people in the South East to be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes – despite no prior history of the disease in his family. As is common with Diabetes – and the side effects associated with both the disease and the treatment regime – there was a serious deterioration in other aspects of Paul’s overall health

David Older was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at only 19 years of age – despite no recorded history of the disease in his family. Now 35 years old, David works out 2 to 3 times a week at the Stour Centre under the supervision and support of the Trust’s Exercise on Referral team.

Gym member fights debilitating neurological disease to row 62km in 5 hours!

Gym member Derek is one of only five people in the UK to suffer from the debilitating neurological condition - Devics disease. With such a rare condition, Derek was only properly diagnosed five years ago, and, under the guidance of the Trust's Exercise on Referral team has gone from being unable to walk, to rowing 25kms twice a week including a marathon 62kms in just five hours.

Heart attack survivor rows over 250km in July!! Three years ago, whilst still in her 50’s Jenny Tippen suffered a heart attack. Despite a strong history of heart problems in her family, Jenny was fit and active. She was not overweight; had no cholesterol problems or high blood pressure, and didn’t drink or smoke. Not an obvious candidate for such a serious medical scare.
